Mildred Goggans Woods, 96, of Charleston, SC, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024. Family will receive friends Saturday, January 27 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Dustin Murray will officiate.

Mildred Goggans Woods, daughter of R. J. Goggans and Scenus Stephens Goggans, was born and raised in Hamilton, Alabama. She graduated from Parrish High School in 1947 and worked in a local drug store. In 1950, Mildred married Paul Haley Woods, who later became a Baptist minister. Paul and Mildred had three children: Paul H. Woods, Jr.; Mildred Darlene Woods; and Mary Donna Woods Cockrell. Paul and Mildred lived in Parrish, Alabama; Argo, Alabama; and Hamilton, Alabama, before retiring to Jasper, Alabama. As the wife of a minister, Mildred worked along with her husband in the churches where he served. Mildred was a homemaker, but she also enjoyed being a seamstress and serving her community. She volunteered for everything from Vacation Bible School to picking and selling blackberries as a fundraiser for the Parrish Little League baseball team. A woman of deep faith, Mildred always enjoyed interacting with people, whether through church activities, visits to her home, or her well-known yearly yard sales. Mildred had a deep love for family and friends, but she was also known to form friendships with total strangers in the grocery store.

In 2015, Mildred moved to Charleston, South Carolina, to be near her daughter, Mary, son-in-law, Joe, and only grandchild, Elizabeth. While living in Charleston, Mildred loved enjoying her family and going to Elizabeth’s musical and school events. At her home at Meridian Place, Mildred spent much time in the front yard talking to neighbors who passed by, often walking their pets. The dogs always pulled toward Mildred when they saw her in the yard, and she gave them lots of pats and treats. Everyone at Meridian Place knew “Miss Millie.”

Memories of Mildred will be a blessing to her many friends and family.

She was preceded in death by husband, Paul Haley Woods Sr.; children, Mildred Darlene Woods and Paul Haley Woods Jr.; parents, R.J. Goggans (Annie), and Scenus Goggans; siblings, Ray Goggans and Judy Duey.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Donna Woods Cockrell (Joseph F.); granddaughter, Elizabeth Helen Cockrell; brother, Hoyett Goggans (Jacqui); in-laws, Hugh Duey and Phyllis Goggans.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Parrish First Baptist Church Building Fund (P.O. Box 49 Parrish, AL 35580) or a charity of your choice.
