Michael Shannon Brewer passed away and entered into Heaven Home on February 11, 2025 at 6:00 PM in Huntsville Hospital with his Pastor Lon by his side.
Mike graduated high school in 1969 and immediately joined the Marine Corps in July, 1969. The Marines was his passion, followed by his love of family, his faith, his karate and his service to those less fortunate than himself. He was a very selfless person and always ready to give you a smile and just to make a day better for whomever needed it.
He served two tours in the United States Marine Corps on the USS America with a Marine fighter wing doing avionics repair for F4 Phantoms, with the official designation of Aircraft Electric System Technician. He retired with the rank of Sergeant E-6. During his service Mike served in Vietnam. He received the Good Conduct Medal twice; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Sea Service Deployment Medal; Rifle Marksman Badge; and Expert Rifle Badge.
He has a 7th degree black belt of Isshin-ryQ style karate. He taught karate for more than 50 years. During those years he was involved in many different organizations teaching karate. He spent a great deal of time with the Huntsville Achievement School where he taught children with learning disabilities. He loved the kids and the kids loved him. He achieved great pleasure and success watching these children thrive.
Mike served as much as he could in his faith community. He served on many walks and many positions at New Covenant. He was one of the hard working members who put this group together. He felt blessed to be able to touch so many lives. He served not only as Lay Director for Walk #16 but also in 1999 as Community Lay Director. He loved every minute of his lay ministry.
Mike was preceded in death by his Father, Elvin Bruce Brewer, his Mother, Margaret Mellons Brewer Bellamy, Step-Father Bellamy. He leaves behind his wife of 38 years Patricia (Trish) Brewer, one daughter, Tonya Langley, one son Eric (Marie) Brewer, three grandchildren, Caity Langley, Sean Langley and Daniel Brewer. He is also survived by brothers Ronald Brewer, David Brewer, half brother George Brewer and two half sisters Sarah Parker and Sally Brewer.
Mike was very much a “jeans and t-shirt” kind of guy. He had an extensive collection of t-shirts depicting his love for Jesus, his country, and the Marines. He would always wear jeans and one of those t-shirts or a polo shirt to church.
For that reason, we’ve decided to go with casual attire for the celebration of life. This celebration will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church of Friday, February 21, 2025 from 5:30 – 6:30PM with the family receiving guests at the end of the service. The Huntsville VA Honor Guard will be present to present the flag to the family and for the playing of TAPS. The family does request in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Mike’s honor.
Hazel Green Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
