Michael Kay Savage Schepps, of Birmingham, Alabama, died peacefully after a well-fought battle against cancer the morning of Friday, May 30, 2014.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Winston M. Schepps, and her two married children, Laura K. Eason (Gordon) and Scott C. Schepps (Kiomi). Also surviving are her two brothers, Jim Savage (Helen) and John Savage (Charlotte), along with their children, Robin Savage (Ginger), David Savage, Michele Treese (Brett), Ashley Williams (Whit), and Angela Savage, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Michael Kay was preceded in death by her parents, James Davis Savage and Francis J. Hartsfield.
Michael Kay was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama yet she grew up in the north Alabama area, attending and graduating from Sheffield High in 1958. While in college, Michael Kay worked at the Children’s Fresh Air Farm as pool director. This is where she met not only her best friends, Wendy and Bill Jacoway, but also her husband. In 1962, she received her education degree at Florence State University (UNA). She then went on to teach English at Russellville High School for several years before teaching Special Education at Birmingham’s Opportunity Center. In August 1967, she began her long career with UAB Hospital’s Department of Social Work, primarily focusing on GYN Oncology, where she worked until January, 2014. It was there she met some of her closest friends who became her extended family. UAB was also a place where she helped more people in more ways than we can possibly count. While she was a small Southern lady, her love for others was larger than life and touched everything she did. She enjoyed 20 years of adult tap dancing (recitals included!), spent countless hours in her garden, created numerous beautiful needle point projects, and most of all, loved time spent with family and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at All Saints Episcopal Church. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. with the service starting at 3 p.m. There will be an internment in the All Saint’s Episcopal Garden at 4 p.m. All who love her are welcome to participate as much as they wish. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to UAB Division of GYN Oncology, address: Women’s and Infant Center 1700 6th Ave. S. Birmingham, AL 35233.
