melvin--mel--jones-obituaryMelvin “Mel” Douglas Jones died after a long illness October 2, 2014. Mel was born December 11, 1936 in McAlpin, WV and was the son of Wiley M. (Casey) Jones and Clara P. Jones.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Alabama and a law degree from the Birmingham School of Law.

Mel retired from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. Decorations, medals, badges, citations and campaign ribbons awarded: Silver Star; Bronze Star Medal with V Device and Two Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Medal with Eight Oak Leaf Clusters; Meritorious Service Medal; Senior Parachutist Badge; Ranger Tab; Expert Infantryman Badge; Combat Infantryman Badge; Pathfinder Badge; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Ranger Badge; Vietnam Staff Service Honor Medal 1st Class; Vietnam Jump Wings (Honorary); Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm (unit); Vietnam Cross of Galloway w/Bronze Star; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Silver Star; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Gold Star; and Expert Badge (M-14 & M-16).

He served as Senior Army Instructor at Sparkman High School from 1982 to 1992.

Mel was preceded in death by his two sons, Doug and David. He is survived by his wife, Billie; granddaughter, Casey Rebekah Jones of Panama City, FL; daughter-in-law, Deborah L. Jones of Panama City, FL; and numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

Mel was known by his family to be one who could laugh his way through anything. Beyond his significant achievements he will be remembered for his humor and positive attitude.

Mel’s final resting place will be alongside his sons, Doug and David, at Kent Forest Lawn Cemetery in Panama City, FL.
