A celebration of Life for Mellene B. McGowan, 76, of Nanuet, New York will be held on Saturday January 14, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Pastor Arthur Smith SR. and Elder Michael Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Ms. McGowan passed away December 31, 2022 at her residence in Nanuet, NY. She was born in Clay County, Alabama and attended the Clay County Training Center but graduated high school at Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis then attended Indiana University, Purdue University and Michigan State University, and graduated with her degree in elementary education. Mellene taught for a while at Tabernacle in Indiana then retired after many years of service with Verizon.
She is survived by her son, Roger Lee Jefferson of Nanuet, NY, three sisters Grace Ann Wood of Lineville, Linda Zackery of Lineville, and Tia Smith of Wetumpka, six brothers, Earnest Smith (Dorothy) of Villa Rica, Hilton Smith (Wanda) of Atlanta, Michael Smith (Cynthia) of Chattanooga, Terry Smith (Pam) of Anniston, Stanley Smith (Melinda) of Lineville and Arthur Smith (Joyce) of Eclectic, also 24 nieces and nephews, 33 great nieces and nephews, and 13 great-great nieces and nephews as well as a large extended family.
Brothers and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday January 14, 2023 from 12:00 P.M. until service time at 1:00 P.M.
