Melford J. Charles passed away on March 29th, 2026, in Tanner, Alabama.
He was born on December 21, 1942, to the late Wilford Charles and Syltise Bully on the island of Dominica. Raised in St. Joseph by his grandmother, Cristalina Charles (Ma Joe), he had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and nature, cherishing moments spent with family and friends.
He was married to his beloved wife, Orphana Charles, for 56 years; their children include Greg Charles, Kenny Charles, Karen Charles, Lisaanne Charles, Anice Abraham, Dean Darroux, Scanly Armantrading, and Ashworth Williams. A dedicated provider, Melford worked diligently to ensure his children achieved more than he did—he was a true hero to his family. As a committed Christian, he instilled in his children the values of love and helping those in need. He was a passionate sports fan, a love he passed on to his children.
He is survived by his grandchildren: Khaleed Dowdy, Kei-lah Dowdy, Breanne Charles, Ava Charles, Jayden Hendrickson, Jayda Hendrickson, Simiah Charles, Melana Charles, Dorran Charles, Deshawn Williams, Ashworth Williams Jr., Shane Williams, Ashley Smith, Alexandra Armantrading, Adam Armantrading, Deidrea Darroux, Dimitri Darroux, Diandra Darroux, Anike Freeman, and Kelliean Nesbeth.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Clemie Pierre, and brother, Imbert Charles. He is survived by his sisters, Rosenette Charles, Cluma Pierre, Clefin Webb, and his brothers, Elmo Charles, Sylius Toussaint, Deroy Pierre, Roy Pierre, Vanly Pierre, and Dexter Trocard.
Memorial Service:
A memorial service will take place on April 10 at 11am at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.
