Mary Ruth Maples Townsend, 90 of Massey, AL passed away peacefully on May, 6 2015 at River City Nursing Home. Visitation will be Saturday May, 9 2015 from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. at Peck Funeral Home the funeral service will follow at 11:00 A.M. in Peck Funeral Home Chapel with burial in McKendree Cemetery. The Rev. A. Ray Lee will be officiating.
Mary was born June 1, 1924. She attended schools at Hartselle, Windes, Falkville and Florence State Teachers College. Later she taught at Union School and Massey School where her students were very fond of her and she of them. She was the oldest surviving teacher of Massey School. She retired from clerking at two stores, Kuhns in Hartselle and Wal-Mart in Decatur where her outgoing personality made her many, many friends. She was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church.
Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, John Horace Townsend, and her parents, Ruth Jones Maples and Clyde F. Maples. She is survived by her sons, Don Rickie Townsend (Gayle) and Larry Lamar Townsend (Judy). Her grandchildren are Scott, Crystal (Zack), Mary Ann, Larame (Kasey) and Kristy (Chris). Her six great-grandchildren are Lucas, Austin, Ashley, Mikala, Allie and Hayden. She is also survived by two sisters and their husbands, Clara Nell Howell (Sim) and Rachel King (Cooper). Pallbearers will be Grandsons and Great-Grandsons
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to McKendree Cemetery.
