Mary Hinton Smith, 62, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at her residence in Plantersville. She was born on April 14, 1954 in Jackson, MS to Mallory and Dot Hinton and was raised in Columbus, MS. Mary had a passion for her career as a special educator and her family. She graduated from Lee High School in Columbus in 1972, Mississippi State University in 1977 and earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Mississippi University for Women in 1979. She enjoyed working as a camp counselor at Camp Tik-a-Wika a in Van Vleet in the 1970’s. She also worked at Tupelo City Schools from 1980-2003 and retired in May 2016 from Brilliant High School in Brilliant, AL after working at Faith Haven, North Mississippi Regional Center, Red Bay High School, Millcreek School and Bodock Grove in Pontotoc where her special friend, Floyd Jones, resides. She was an Episcopalian by faith.
Services will be held on July 29, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Stephens officiating. Private burial will follow in Plantersville Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 AM to service time only.
Survivors include her husband Allen Green Smith of Plantersville; daughter Mallory Smith Hamby (Steven) of Tupelo, one grandchild, Lydia Dot Hamby, age 22 months, who she loved dearly; two brothers, Mallory Hinton (Lynne) of Cordova, TN, Robert Hinton (Rita) of New Hope, MS; and one sister, Jane Stegall (Calvin) of Columbus, MS.
