Mary Elizabeth “Bess” Newsom, 94 of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at Huntsville Hospital. Funeral services will be Friday, March 20, 2015, at 3:30 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Roger Jenkins officiating. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery.
Mrs. Newsom was born in Decatur on December 6, 1920, to William Brown and Helen Turner Grubbs. She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Harris E. Newsom; son, Harris E. Newsom Jr.
Mrs. Newsom was a pharmacist for decades with Caddell Drug Store, Modern Apothecary and most recently as a volunteer at the Free Clinic of Decatur-Morgan County. She also remained an active pharmacist until her recent illness. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for over 70 years. She enjoyed worshiping with her friends in the Faithful Sunday school class, loved to needlepoint and quilt and enjoy time with her family.
Survivors include her brother, Edward T. Grubbs; grandchildren, Vicki Puckett and William Edward Newsom; great- grandchildren, Rachel Ann Puckett, Mattie E. Puckett, Braden Newsom and Abby Newsom; special family members include Mrs. Eloise Grubbs, Susan Newsom, Bill and Kay Grubbs, Meg Cryer, Ginny Grubbs, Will Grubbs and Jeff Goodwin.
Pallbearers will be William E. Newsom, William T. Grubbs, Rod Puckett, Jeff Goodwin, Dewey Lynch and Shaun Cryer. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Norris, Willard Burt and Jim Arndt.
