Mary Eleanor Plunkett Comer Kay died March 19, 2026. Eleanor was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee, daughter of Hobert and Vergie Plunkett. She graduated from Lawrence County High School and followed her military husband to The Philippines, Germany, as well as many stateside assignments. Military retirement brought Eleanor and family to Huntsville where she continued her career and eventually retired from Civilian Personnel at Redstone Arsenal. Eleanor always set the standard for volunteer service at church, community, hospital, and wherever she was needed.
She is survived by daughter Mary Comer, grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister Virginia Rankin of Nashville, TN, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Also surviving, Eleanor’s late husband’s family, The Kay’s.
Celebration of Life service will be held at the Whitesburg Baptist Church-South Chapel on March 25, 2026. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Private interment at Maple Hill cemetery will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Whitesburg Baptist Church Homebound Ministry, local animal rescue/adoption organizations, or your favorite charity. ”
Visitation will be Wednesday March 25, 2026 from 12:00pm until 1:00pm at Whitesburg Baptist Church South Campus followed by church service. A private family graveside will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.
