Mary Doreen Brent Mary Doreen Brent, age 84 of Cowan passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021 at NHC Tullahoma. She was born January 1, 1937 in Sewanee to the late Riley Finney and Margaret Morgan Finney. She graduated from Franklin County High School in 1955 and attended Watkins College of Art. Her first job was with American Paper and Twine in Nashville and shortly following she met and married Carl Monroe Brent in October of 1958. Shortly after marriage Doreen devoted her life to raising her family. In 1974, she went to work at Bordeaux Hospital in Medical Records before moving back to Sewanee to care for her mother. Upon returning to Sewanee, she worked as a caregiver and receptionist for Dr. Thrower and retired from Jim Oliver’s Smokehouse as a night auditor. Doreen was a devoted member of Cowan First Baptist Church. She was an avid reader and read her Bible every day and loved to play hymns on the piano. She enjoyed sitting outside in the sun or working in the flower garden. Doreen was a dedicated caregiver for her family and enjoyed cooking large meals for everyone. She will be remembered as a soft spoken, caring and feisty lady; who had a great sense of humor and loved everyone with all her heart. In her spare time, you could find her watching day time soap operas, Gunsmoke and the Hallmark Channel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Monroe Brent; brother, Roger Finney; great-grandson, Landyn Statham; brother-in-law, Scott Rathman; and sister-in-law, June Finney. She is survived by her children, Ginger Brent (Vince Holliday) of Winchester, Teresa (David) Langley of Sewanee, Margaret Brent of Decherd, Timothy (Rosa) Brent of Winchester; grandchildren, Emily (John) Lowther of Decherd, Kayla Ventress of Winchester, Rachel Ventress (fiancé James Wright) of Winchester, Steven Ventress (fiancé Ashley) of Seymour, CT, Jessie (Danny) Gilliam of Tracy City, Holly Langley of Sewanee and Jake Cope of Decherd; great-grandchildren, Rylan Parvin, Nolan and Hudson Lowther, Priscilla Sayre, Xavier “Gus” Wright, Lexie Hall, Bret, Ashton and Sarah Gilliam, Matthew and Sydney Langley and David Shetters; siblings, Carl (Bobbie) Finney of Morrison, Sam (Jean) Finney of Keith Springs and Diane Rathman of Council Bluff, Iowa; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Saturday at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 pm Sunday, June 27, 2021 at Moore-Cortner Chapel with Bro. Johnny Hand officiating.
