Mary Adeline Vaughn Thomas passed away on November 6, 2024. A lifelong resident of the Monrovia community, Mary was a devout Christian, a devoted wife, a strong and loving mother, and a dependable friend. Mary was a graduate of Sparkman High School. She and her husband James owned and ran Thomas Pit BBQ for over 44 years. Mary’s humorous, direct, and opinionated approach to everyone and everything was a source of laughter, joy and love to her widespread family and devoted friends. Mary was a longtime member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for young adults and adult women, inspiring and educating generations of young people in their walk with Jesus Christ.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, James Thomas; her daughters, Susan Thomas Miller (Patrick) and Sally Thomas Hilliard (Johnny); her brother, William Louis Vaughn, Jr. (Pat); her granddaughters, both of whom were named after her, Judith Adeline Miller and Mary O’Neal Miller; and a multitude of cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Louis Vaughn, Sr. and Frances McCrary Vaughn; and a sister who died at birth, Frances Carolyn Vaughn.
Funeral services will be at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Monrovia on Monday, November 11, 2024, with visitation beginning at 10 AM followed by a funeral service at 12 PM. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
