Martha was born in Sheffield, Alabama to Juanita L. Ferguson and Mervin E. Isbell. She was a member of the Muscle Shoals Church of God. She was a full time homemaker as well as a very devoted wife, mother, granny and friend.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Juanita L. Ferguson and Mervin E. Isbell, and her children, Ronald Smith, Susan McMahan and Pamela Smith.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Charles E. Vess, her children, Deborah V. Goins and husband, Mark, Kenneth E. Vess and wife, Christy, Kristina D. Vess and boyfriend, Cass Utley, Lisa Stout and husband, Dennis, and Patricia Tanner Boatwright, her grandchildren, Meghan Goins, Adrienne Goins, Garrett Vess, Wyatt Vess, Reagan Utley, Jennifer Kimbrough, Kevin McMahan, Bradley Stout, Zachary Boatwright, three great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, an aunt, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Special thanks to Lorie Knight, who began as her nurse, but quickly became and will always be a member of the family.
Martha was a spiritually strong woman and was a living example of how to be a Godly mother to all who knew her. Although she experienced much heartache in her lifetime, she never let it affect her love for God or her desire to share His love to others.
She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends. Friends especially enjoyed eating her chicken and dressing and potato salad at all the church socials. No birthday was ever complete without cake and ice cream at Granny and Pa’s house.
She enjoyed attending events involving her children and grandchildren. She attended every football, basketball, baseball and softball game possible as well as many band competitions and concerts. You could see her eyes shine with pride when she watched them play and perform.
This life may have taken its toll on her body but nothing could ever take her beauty. This kind of beauty comes only by loving the Lord.
Serving as pallbearers will be Greg Michael, Johnny Lang, Kyle Dobbs, Greg McNatt, Jeremy Behel, Andrew Risner, Mark White, Dylan Gibson, and Jamey Vickers. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Harold Vess, Jerry White, Jimmy Bradford and Tom Haney.
