Martha McCown Vandiver, 90, passed away December 13, 2021. Martha was born on January 7, 1931, in Hazel Green, Alabama. She was one of five children born to George D. McCown and Jimmie Iris Speck. Martha was a lifelong resident of Madison County and graduated from Hazel Green High School. She attended Auburn University and graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She taught school for 25 years at New Market, Buckhorn and Lee High Schools. Martha was involved in many community activities including Junior League of Huntsville, President of the Huntsville Art Museum Guild, Delta Kappa Gamma, Athena Book Club, President of the Twickenham Historic District Board, and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Vandiver and her granddaughter, Meredith Carlton. She is survived by children, Mary Lynn Carlton, Frank Vandiver (Terrie), Iris Thorpe (David); grandchildren, Ashley Carlton, Franklin Vandiver (Elina), Will Vandiver, Bannon Thorpe (Rollins), David Thorpe (Christen), Robert Thorpe; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery on Saturday, December 18th at 11:00 a.m.
