Martha Maxine Streit Foote died Tuesday, July 4, 2017. The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. today at Colbert Memorial Gardens with service to follow at 11 a.m.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Streit (Dallas Eleanor Whitlock), and her son, Charlie Rhea Foote.
She is survived by her daughters, Eleanor Foote Rohling (Don) and Martha Jim Foote Wright, of Florence, and Susan Foote Abbott (Joe Jr.), of Birmingham; and daughter-in-law, Rena Foote, of Meigs, Georgia; grandchildren, Robert Joseph Rohling, Christopher William Rohling, and Matthew Lawrence Rohling, of Florence, Jeanine Rohling Proctor (Shane) and Jennifer Wright Mauk (John), of Muscle Shoals, Christina Wright Brown (Derek), of Moulton, Victoria Dallas Foote, of Meigs, Georgia, and Peter Lawson Foote, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Joe Boone Abbott III, Martha Streit Abbott and Henry Charles Abbott, of Birmingham; and seven great-grandchildren. Martha is also survived by her brother, Charlie Glover Streit (Jean), of Muscle Shoals.
Martha was born March 18, 1924, in Sheffield. After graduating from Sheffield High School, she attended the University of Alabama and was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. She owned Foote Shoe Store and later worked in the family business, Streit Milk Company. She completed her career with Vulcan Materials Company.
She was an active member of Columbia Avenue Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and singing in the choir until its closing in 1992. She then joined Old Brick Presbyterian Church. Martha was an extremely gifted and talented knitter and enjoyed her association with the KnitWits. Her afghans were appreciated by many brides who received them for wedding presents.
The family is grateful to her Eldercare caregivers, especially Dottie Armstrong, Teresa Johnson and Debra Trevino, and the dedicated staff of Morningside of Sheffield.
