Martha Lois Johnson Gilbert, of Sheffield, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the age of 92. Her visitation will be Monday, August 6, 2018 from 10 to noon at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow at noon in the funeral home chapel with Jim Holland and Chad Holder officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.

Martha was a native of Tuscumbia and a lifelong member of York Terrace Baptist Church. She worked as a telephone operator for the phone company during WWII. She later worked for the City of Sheffield and most recently worked as a greeter for Sam’s Club in Florence. Most of all she was an amazing mother, grandmother, sister, friend and second mom to many. She loved everyone and was always kind and helpful. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph K. Gilbert, Sr; parents, Charles and Annie Johnson; sisters, Mary Duncan, Vivian Porter and Maxine Leech; and brothers, Floyd and Charles Johnson.

She is survived by her son, Joe (Gail) Gilbert; daughter, Carolyn (Steve) Abston; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Lyman Mitchell, who was more than her primary care physician, a special family friend; to Denise Bermele for her special care in the ICU; and Calamae Cochran who was more like a sister than a neighbor.

Pallbearers will be Whit Gilbert, Andy Abston, Tyler Abston, Joseph Jordan, Michael Jordan, Ricky Lindsey, Lynn Leech and Mike Vaughn.
