Martha was born on May 11, 1950, in Madison (Limestone County) to the late Elder John Humphrey Thatch and Minister Martha Ann Ray Thatch. She was a resident of Decatur. She departed this life on Jan. 4, 2016, at Huntsville Hospital.
Martha accepted the Lord as her Savior and was baptized at an early age at Mt. Zion CPCA under the pastorate of Rev. Aaron Toney. She was an active member of the church, serving on the Mother’s Board, assistant Chaplain of the Missionary Society Board, and in the Unity Choir. Martha loved working in the church, and did so faithfully until her health restricted her ability to perform her duties.
Martha was a 1968 graduate of Trinity High School in Athens. Afterwards, she attended Riverside School in Nashville, Tennessee, where she received a Certificate of Practical Nursing. She continued her studies at Calhoun Community College. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at Humana Hospital, Huntsville, which is now known as Huntsville Hospital. She retired from Regional Hospital in Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Willie Humphrey and Elder John Henry Thatch, Sr.
Mother Martha’s memory will be cherished by her siblings, Marilyn E. Dennis, Decatur, Annie M. Harris, Chicago, Illinois, the Rev. John I. Thatch, Madison, Essie L. Hammonds (Ferdinand), Madison, Cornell D. Thatch (Marilyn), Riverdale, Georgia, Ernestine N. Watts, St. Louis, Missouri, the Rev. Ronald M. Thatch, Decatur; her only aunt, Ollie Mae Ray Locklayer (David), Hillsboro; her favorite cousin, Elder Johnnie Mae Grigsby, Madison; a dear friend, Dorothy Kennedy, Decatur; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Martha will be remembered for her warm personality. Her greetings to all she met was always with a radiant smile. We, the family, take comfort in the memory of her perfect gift of caring for our brother, Ronald.
A Celebration of Life will be noon, Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 at Mt. Zion C.P. Church in Madison and inhumation in Thatch Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 at Reynolds Funeral Home.
