Marshall Welton Newman 89, of Sheffield died Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012. His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., October 6th. He will lie in state one hour before the service. Rev. Jim Warren and Rev. Chad Holder are officiating.
Mr. Newman was born in Welti, Alabama and grew up on a farm in Joppa, Alabama. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the European Theater. His life’s profession was as an educator. He was principal of Colbert County High School 29 years. Mr. Newman was a member of the Lion’s Club, Colbert County Teacher’s Association and American Legion Post 31. He was Deacon Emirtus of Leighton Baptist and First Baptist Church Sheffield.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Katie Lee and L.B. Newman, His sister and brother-in-law, Wynelle and Jimmy Ryan, and his wife, Miriam.
Survivors include children Karen Myers and husband, Randy and Susan Corsbie and husband, David; grandchildren, Carrie Wood, Adam Wood (Stacey), Carolyn Myers, Liz Behel (Jason), Jeff Corsbie and Chris Corsbie; four great-grandboys and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be deacons of First Baptist Sheffield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Children’s Hospital of Birmingham or First Baptist Sheffield.
When Mr. Newman retired he said, “To serve as Colbert County High School principal has provided me an opportunity I will ever cherish and the many fond memories will be a joy to recall as I reminisce during my retirement.” Thank each of you who stopped by to reminisce with him.
Pallbearers will be Jack Davis, James Bedsole, Gilbert Prince, Lewis Patterson, Bob Smith and John “Buck” Adams.
