Marion John Norton – Obituary

Funeral service for Marion John Norton, age 85, of Decatur, will be Saturday, December 28, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Formby officiating.  The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service.    Interment will be in Decatur City Cemetery.

Mr. Norton, who died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at his residence, was born October 3, 1928, in Hartford, IL, to John W. Norton and Beulah Blankenship Norton.   He was a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church.  Mr. Norton graduated from the University of Missouri School of Engineering in 1951.  He served in the U. S. Army from 1953 – 1955.  He moved to Decatur in 1963, working with Hayes International.  In 1968, he began and operated Norton Construction Company until 1982, when he began working for Morton Thiokol, from which he retired in 1992.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jewell Coppedge Norton of Decatur; two sons, Matthew Kelley Norton (Laura) of Selma, and Mitchell T. Norton (Lisa) of Daytona Beach, FL, ; one sister, Janice K. Lawrence (Terry) of Plano, TX; four grandchildren, Jennifer Jones (Daniel) of Raleigh, NC, Sarah N. Goldman (Brian) of Frisco, TX, Matthew J. Norton of Plantation, FL, and Katie E. Carter (John) of Shreveport, LA; two great-grandchildren; two nephews/nieces; and five great-nephews/nieces.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Norton, Brian Goldman, Daniel Jones, John Carter, Kenny Shelton, and Greg Shelton.  Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Shelton, Marvin Juhlic, Bill Cosby, Kermit Tucker, Haruki Jochochi, and Frank Holland.
