Mariel Susan Wood, 72, of Cordova, Alabama, died Thursday, December 31, 2020, at Cordova Health and Rehabilitation following an arduous fight against Covid-19.

A private, family only, graveside service will be held Friday, January 8, 2021, in the Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Bagley, Alabama. The Rev. Dale Reed will officiate.

Born October 10, 1948 in Ogden Utah, Mariel was the youngest daughter of the late Geneva (Baker) and John H. Whitburn. Mariel grew up in and around Sayre, Alabama and graduated from Corner High School in 1968.

Survivors include her daughter: Lisa (Tim) Vines of Mount Olive, Alabama; her sister: Sherry (James) Swiney of Sayre, Alabama; her brother: Wayne (Diane) Whitburn of Quinton, Alabama; 2 grandchildren: Melia (Austin) Faulkner, and Payton Vines; 2 great-grandchildren: Rhett and Merritt Faulkner, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Mariel was preceded in death by her husband Larry Joseph Wood. Mariel met Larry at just 6 years old and the two were inseparable until Larry’s death in 2016.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the many healthcare professionals at Cordova Health and Rehabilitation who went above and beyond to provide many years of tender care to Mariel (and to Larry). Your kindness and personal care will never be forgotten.
