Marie Boyko Kurek, 95, died Sunday, Jan 21, 2018. She had recently moved to Merrill Gardens retirement community in Madison, Alabama. Marie was born on January 13, 1923, in Baltimore MD to John and Anastazia (Augusta) Boyko
On August 20, 1945, she married Thaddeus M. Kurek at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Baltimore. Marie always told how their wedding rehearsal occurred on “V-J” Day.
Marie graduated from Patterson Park High School in Baltimore. She was trained in classical voice at Peabody Institute in Baltimore. She also attended the University of Maryland, and took additional classes at Stetson University in Florida.
Before she retired she served as a passport agent for the Navy at Bay St. Louis in Mississippi. Marie loved to play golf and remembered being able to play the Par 3 course in Huntsville for $1. She enjoyed volunteer work, working at both Huntsville Hospital and Humana Hospital. Active with her church, she sang in the choir at St. Michael’s in Baltimore, St. Mary Magdalene in Maitland FL, and St. Mary of the Visitation in Huntsville AL. Marie also took Holy Communion to the shut-ins of Visitation parish.
Marie is predeceased by her parents and her husband; her sister, Constance Rose Boyer; in-laws Eugenia, Jean W., and Alfred Kurek, Hedwig and Frank Kutz, all of Baltimore; Loretta and David Krogmann of W. Lafayette IN; and her son-in-law Walter Scotty Neustadter of Huntsville. She is survived by her daughter Diane Gerrell Neustadter, her grandson Thaddeus Carlton Gerrell and his wife Marella, her niece Dr. Constance Lynn Holbrook, and several great- nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, 222 Jefferson St,, Huntsville AL. Mass will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be at a later date at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver CO.
