Margaret “Joan” Underwood, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Hendrix Health and Rehabilitation Center in Double Springs, Alabama.
She was born October 18, 1931 in the Fairview Community to Oscar and Grace Nicklaus. Joan graduated from Winston County High School in 1951 and later married her “sweetheart”, Adis Underwood, they were married for over 50 years. She retired from the ASCS office after dedicating 42 years of service. Joan loved to play the piano and sing gospel hymns. She loved to eat chocolate covered cherries. Joan also loved to sew and travel. She was a beloved member of Fairview Baptist Church for 78 years.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Fairview Baptist Church in Double Springs where the service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Vance Hutton will officiate.
Joan is survived by her niece, Regina Holland (Kevin); great nieces, Kim Sargent, Kristi Bonds (Casey), great nephew, Richard Sargent; and a host of nieces, nephews whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adis Underwood; parents, Oscar and Grace Nicklaus; sister, Lorene Goddard; and nieces, Shirley Sargent and Debbie Duncan.
Pallbearers will be Matt Frasier, Michael Frasier, Charles Willis, William Sargent, Casey Bonds, and Brooks Bonds. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kevin Holland and Richard Sargent.
