Avon Hagood 49982159Margaret Avon Hagood, 86, of Rogersville, Alabama, passed away on October 25, 2026 leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, faith, friendship, and treasured memories.

Born and raised in Rogersville, she was the daughter of Reeder Johnson and Mauvolene Johnson. Rogersville remained her home throughout her life, and she had a deep love for the community and the many friendships she made there through the years.

She shared 58 years of marriage with her husband, James Hagood. Together, they built a wonderful life centered on family, friends, and their hometown. During James’s service as mayor of Rogersville, they were active in the community they both loved and formed many lasting friendships.

She retired from NASA after 30 years of service, a career of which she and her family were very proud. Her faith was constant throughout her life and shaped the way she loved her family, treasured her friendships, and cared for those around her. She was a faithful member of the Rogersville church of Christ, and her church family was a source of strength and comfort throughout her life.

Some of her happiest times were simply spent with the people she loved. She enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and several international countries and instilling her love of travel in her children. She loved her friends, enjoyed being around people, and loved to laugh. Those who knew her will remember how easily her laughter came and how much joy she found in family, friendship, and time spent together.

Above all, she loved her family. She is survived by her children, Stuart Hagood (Penny South), Nicole Darnell (Seth), and her beloved granddaughter, Willa Kate Darnell. Being Willa Kate’s Nana brought her tremendous joy, and the bond they shared held a very special place in her heart.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Hagood, brother Aaron Johnson, and sister Mary Ann Kerr.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Penny South, Jasmine Rowell, and Ellen Fuqua for their care and assistance in keeping Mom at home. To Affinity Hospice – Kirsten Fenton, Leca Hutto, Lisa Downs, and Matt Flanagan – your extraordinary kindness, patience, and loving care for our mom will never be forgotten.

Visitation for Mrs. Hagood will be Thursday, October 29th from 11-1 at Rogersville Church of Christ. The funeral service will follow. Burial will be in Civitan Cemetery. Larry Wilson will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Barry Berryhill, Adam Berryhill, Kevin Estes, Jason Goodman, Keith Haraway, and Tyler Haraway.

Memorial donations can be made to the Rogersville Church of Christ in her name
