MORGAN COUNTY-On May 31 a body was located on the bridge. The Madison County Coroner said the dead body was discovered in a blanket on the side of the roadway near the guard rail. He has ruled the death a homicide.
The body found on the Hwy 231 Bridge has been identified as David Merrit, 39 of Arab. Daniel Ray Shelton, 55 of Arab, has been arrested and charged with Murder.
On Saturday, Morgan County S.W.A.T. executed a search warrant at a residence on Seagrove Rd in Lacey’s Spring as part of

the investigation. Shelton was not present but was located earlier on Sunday by the Cullman Police Department in Cullman County.
Shelton was taken to the Huntsville Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, where he was interviewed by detectives with the Major Crimes Unit. After the interview authorities said Shelton was placed under arrest and booked into the Madison County Jail on a charge of murder and abuse of a corpse.
