Mamie Burgess, affectionately known as “Granny” by friends and family, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at NHC on Walnut Lane, in Columbia, Tennessee
Mamie was born on April 30, 1927 in Enterprise, Tennessee.
She was a proud homemaker and her passion was singing with her group “The Singing Volunteers” at local nursing homes for 15 years. She attended Highland Park Baptist Church for 60 years and was an active member. She enjoyed gardening flowers and being outdoors. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 19 Columbia.
Mamie was the beloved wife of the late Earl C Burgess and daughter of Wilbur Felix Adams and Maggie Ophelia Henson Adams.
She is survived by her four daughters, Jane Earl Broadway (Gary), Diane Burgess, Deborah Howell (Jerry), Karen Lee Burgess, brother Carlos Wayne Adams (Bettie), grandchildren Robert Earl Demastus, Tracy Denise Howell (Jay), Chad Howell (Gaynelle), Elizabeth (Glenn) Nicks, 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Earl C Burgess, her sisters Berniece Follis, Margaret “Bobbie” Anderson, Katherine “Kitty” Gammons, Melba Ann “Judy” Anderson and grandchildren Jerry “Dinker” Howell, Gerald Lee Demastus and Janis Carol. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Pallbearers will be the grandson, great grandsons, and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be her Sunday school class, the Glory Seekers, at Highland Park Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary unit 19.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Caris Hospice and the care that they gave and the American Legion Auxiliary unit 19.
A service for Mamie will be Monday, January 30, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee with. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 30, 2023 from 11:00 AM to the start of the service at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee. Mamie will be laid to rest at Polk Memorial Gardens next to her husband. After the graveside, the family would like to invite people to Highland Park Baptist church for fellowship.
Williams Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
