Mable Lynda Bishop – Obituary

LyndaMable Lynda Bishop passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013, after a brief illness. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Pinkard Funeral Home, Russellville, with the funeral services following at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Ralph Bishop Jr. Burial will be at East Franklin Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by parents, James L. and Myrtie Bishop; brothers, Guy Bishop, Leo Bishop, Leon Bishop, Ray Bishop, Ralph Bishop, Roy Bishop and Larry Bishop. She is survived by sister, Dianne Bishop Miller (Harold Miller); and many nieces; and nephews.

Miss Bishop was a 1947 registered nursing graduate of the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Birmingham, Ala. She continued her education with a BSN in nursing in 1952 from the University of Alabama and a MSN in 1959 from the University of Texas. She was a member of the Alabama Nursing Corps from 1944 until 1947. She worked in many large hospitals including those in Memphis, Tenn., Galveston, Texas, Orangeburg, S.C. and Lexington, Ky., before finally returning to the area where she was born and raised to become Director of Nursing at Helen Keller Hospital.

Miss Bishop enjoyed traveling and visited many overseas locations including Greece and Jerusalem. She also enjoyed being a member of the Florence Pilot Club and volunteering as a foster grandparent at local elementary schools. Additionally, she was a volunteer at Helen Keller Hospital and could be seen often working out at the Keller Wellness Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Miss Bishop’s name to the Ralph C. Bishop Sr. Scholarship Fund, CB&S Bank, Russellville, Ala.

Pallbearers will be Chris Bishop, Frank Bishop, Bill Bishop, Les Fergerson, Mike Williams and Justin Taylor.

The family would like to extend their heart-felt thanks to Burns Nursing and Rehab and all the employees there who assisted with Miss Bishop’s care. Many thanks also to Laura Gann with Hospice of North Alabama.
