M. O. “Ottis” Sides, age 99, of Jasper, entered his eternal rest on September 24, 2019 at his home.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11:00 a.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church on Highway 5. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Mr. Sides was a career educator and administrator with the Walker County Schools for over thirty years. He was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, choir member, and Sunday School teacher. He was a charter member of the Sonshine Singers Ministry, and a Sacred Harp singer. He was a veteran. He was also Past Master of York Lodge 211, and member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

He was a daily fixture at the domino table at Jasper Mall for many years. He loved to sing, to fish, to quail hunt, and to garden. He coached basketball and little league baseball; he was the “old man” on his church softball team. He was very proud of his heritage as a descendant of Walker County pioneer families: He was an especially devoted father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years, Lucille Sherer Sides; his parents, E. L. and Rosa Ramey Sides; his brothers, Woodrow and Braman Sides; and his sister, Laura Sides Gober.

He is survived by his children, Linda J. Sides of Jasper; and Terry W. Sides [Dianne], of Montevallo; grandson, Matt Sides; sister, Easter Lee; special nephew, James H. Sherer; caregivers, Candace Mann and Lori Cain; dear friend, Marcus Phillips; along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and former students.

Special thanks to our wonderful team from Kindred Hospice, including Tonya Rice, Teresa Atkins, and Brenda Robertson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Kindred Hospice or to the Sacred Harp Musical Heritage Association:Camp Fasola.
