Lynwood Dean O’Farrell passed away December 29, 2019. A native of Bratt, Florida, he was preceded in death by his parents, CB and Lila Bell Gresham O’Farrell and his son, Lynwood Dean O’Farrell, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bobbie Coke O’Farrell and son, Stephen Daniel O’Farrell.
He was a career banker, beginning with Memphis Bank and Trust, where he served as Vice President and Senior Trust Officer, before becoming the President of First National Bank of Eastern Arkansas for six years. He later served as Chairman and CEO of SouthTrust Bank of Huntsville for twenty years.
Dean was an alumnus of Ernest Ward High School in Walnut Hill, Florida, Pensacola Junior College, The University of Alabama, and Southern Methodist University Graduate School of Banking.
Dean was active in civic and community affairs, having served as Chairman of the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Board of the American Red Cross of North Alabama, Chairman of the Board of the Tennessee Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America, President of the Huntsville Rotary Club, Chairman of the Board of Volunteers of America of North Alabama, President of Huntsville Quarterback Club, President of Huntsville Jaycees, member of the faculty of the SMU Graduate School of Banking, where he was President of the Student Government Association, Founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Eastern Arkansas College and a member of the Army- Community Relations Committee, and the Acme Club. Dean also served on the following boards: The Board of Visitors of the University of Alabama, College of Commerce, the UAH School of Administrative Science, Huntsville YMCA, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Greater Huntsville Foundation, Huntsville City Schools Foundation, Huntsville Hospital Hospitality House, United Way of Madison County, Huntsville Botanical Gardens, Humana Hospital of Huntsville, and Presbyterian Home for Children. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. During his banking career, Dean received the Outstanding Young Banking Award (1970), Outstanding Young Man of the State of Arkansas (1972) and was inducted into the Young Presidents of America Organization (1973). He served as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville, Alabama. Dean also served on the North Alabama Presbytery.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville on Thursday, January 2nd at 11:00 am, with visitation at the church at 10:00 am prior to the Memorial Service.
