Lula Mae “Lou” Griggs Kilgore of Pelham, Alabama passed away March 21, 2025 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama.
Lou was born on May 5, 1946 to the late Odelle Garrett Griggs and Rufus Woodrow Griggs in Aberdeen, Mississippi. She was a 1964 graduate of Aberdeen High School.
Lou married James Verdo Kilgore Jr. on Jan 3 1964. Together, they raised three children, making their home in Atlanta, Memphis, Birmingham, and New Orleans before settling in Pelham.
Lou was a social butterfly and leaves behind a large host of friends she considered family. She loved bargain shopping, playing bingo, and making people laugh. She was well-known for her generosity and her fun-loving spirit will be missed fiercely by those who love her.
She is preceded in death by her brothers Johnny and Douglas “Buddy” Griggs, sister Kay Rogers, husband James Kilgore, daughter Rachel Kilgore, and son James “Beau” Kilgore.
She is survived by her daughter, Dru Martinez (Mauricio), grandchildren Kaitlin Candelaria (Adrian), Corey Kilgore (Jordan), Alex and Luci Martinez, and great grandchildren Reese, Bonnie, Eloise, Theo, and Emelia, sister Mavis Chism, and long-time caregiver and friend Penny Huddleston.
Visitation and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 27 beginning at 1 PM at Pathways United Methodist Church in Pelham, Alabama. A graveside service will take place on Friday, March 28 at 11:00 AM in Sulligent, Alabama at the Sulligent City Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Pastor Matthew Kirkpatrick.
Honorary pallbearers include Anita Lawson, Lynn Scott, Angela Cardinale, Kathie Threatt, Janet Lovell, Windy Myers, Beverly Cico, Dot Vance, Carol Rickles, Charlotte Parvin, Mary Clark, Penny Huddleston, and Olivia Adams.
