Dr. Lowry Roy Young Jr. “Sandy” died Wednesday evening at home, December 21, 2022, at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his wife, M. Carolyn Young; son, Eric B. Young; parents, Lowry R. Young Sr. and Anne L. Young; sister, Sallie A. Young; and brother-in-law, Dickie M. Carlson. Survivors include his children, Lowry R. Young III, Rebecca A. Young, and Andrew C. Young; grandson, Andrew T. Young (Kathryn); grandchildren, Kathryn L. Young and Christian L. Young; great-granddaughter, Emilia Frances Young; and sister-in-law, Patti L. Carlson.

Dr. Young was born in Asheville, NC to Lowry R. and Anne L. Young August 26, 1931. Later, the family moved to Bulls Gap, TN where he graduated valedictorian from Bull’s Gap high school in 1949. He proceeded to attend East Tennessee State for three years until enrolling in University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis in 1952. During his college summer breaks, he spent his time working for Del Monte canning factory. In 1955, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and graduated as medical class Vice-President.

After completing internship at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis in1957, he began practicing in Lynch Kentucky’s coal mining company. In 1958, Dr. Young returned to Memphis to begin Radiology residency at Methodist Hospital. He then moved to Huntsville, AL in 1961 to become the third radiologist and to help establish Radiology Associates (now Radiology of Huntsville) that would go on to serve Huntsville and other Tennessee valley communities. He practiced Radiology for 40 years.

Dr. Young always made sure everyone around him was cared for. It was his passion in life! Whether it was his family, friends, church, or community, he did what he could to help everyone!

He was member and Elder of Big Cove Presbyterian Church (1979-2022), President of Alabama Academy of Radiology (75-76), Chief of Medical staff at Huntsville Hospital (81-83), and Chief Division of Radiology at Huntsville Hospital (85-87). He won several awards throughout his career including “The Alabama Academy of Radiology Silver Medal Award” and “The Fellow Emeritus American College of Radiology”.

In his spare time, he loved to read, cook, vacation at the beach with his family, or go to dinner with friends and colleagues. Besides being a physician, he really enjoyed teaching his students Radiology.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday January 7th at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will immediately follow in the chapel with the Rev. Kim Mitchel officiating. Dr. Young and his wife, Carolyn, will be buried later at Greenhill Cemetery in his hometown of Asheville, NC.
