Funeral service for Lowell Gilbert Holmes, age 89, of Decatur, will be Monday, October 31, 2016 at 10:00 am at Shelton Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Doug Ripley and Rev. Benny Sivley officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 30, 2016 from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at the chapel. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. Holmes , who died Thursday, October 27, 2016, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, Parkway, was born February 10, 1927, to Acker Holmes and Annie Bell Burke Holmes. He was preceded in death by his wife Jalena Davis Holmes.
He is survived by two sons Don Holmes (Brenda) of Plano, TX; David Holmes (Gena) of Decatur; two daughters Neva Ransom (Jim) of Birchwood, TN and Patricia Cunningham ( Doug) of Chattanooga, TN; eleven granddaughters and four great granddaughters.
Mr. Holmes was a World War II veteran serving on the USS Missouri. He was also a life long member of Moulton Heights Baptist/ Decatur Baptist Church of Decatur where he served as lifetime deacon emeritus.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Decatur Baptist Church mission Fund and North Alabama Hospice.
