Louise Handley Wilson went to be with the Lord on July 17, 2016, surrounded by her family.
She was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in Special Education. She was retired from the Jasper City School System having taught twenty-five years at the Shrine School for special needs children. She was selected to receive the Alpha Brown Award in 1974 as the top teacher in the state in the field of Special Education. She was selected in 1978 as the top teacher in Special Education for Walker County. In 1981, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Walker County Association of Retarded Citizens. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Her activities-even into her eighties-included Homemaker’s Club, RSVP Volunteer, AARP member, Walker Walker’s Club, Widowed Persons Support Group, Circle of Friends, Tired & Retired Club member, and as a board member of the Community Health Systems. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church most of her life and served as WMU Director, VBS Director, Sunday School teacher, as well as working on the kitchen and benevolence committees. She taught a Bible study at Ridgewood Health Care Center twice a month. She was presently a member of Central Baptist Church on Airport Road in Jasper. Louise spent her last two years as a resident of Ridgeview Health Services where she was selected as Ms. Ridgeview 2014. She had such a vibrant personality and was loved by all. She never met a stranger. She will truly be missed by a host of family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 5:00 PM at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Collins-Burke Chapel. Burial will be at Samaria Baptist Church.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her Parents-Dr. Wiley and Cora Handley; Husband-Kermit D. Wilson; Brothers-Clayton and Leo Handley.
She is survived by her Sons-Darryle Wilson (Debbi) and Durwood Wilson; Grandson-Matthew (Jennifer); Great Grandchildren-Anna and Emma.
