On December 14, 2024 my husband, Lonny Harbin, went to live with Jesus. I’m Barbara King Harbin, his wife of 59 years. Together we shared two children, Lesli (Kenny) and Brent (Jean). We have eight grandchildren, Alissa Smith (Ben), Lydia Harbin, Nathan Harbin (Tori), Noah Wagnon (Montana), Carter Wagnon (Ella), Emory Wagnon, Polly Harbin, and Lee Harbin. We also have six wonderful great grandchildren, Archer, Haddie, Asher, Able, Aubrey, and Addie. His family brought him incredible joy throughout his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents Bud and Kathryn Harbin, his grandparents, Charles and Florence Harbin, W.D. and Esther Brooks, and his in-laws, Audie and Bobbie King. Lonny’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bubba and Jan Montgomery, and his nephew Neal Hunt also preceded him in death.
Lonny was a 1964 graduate of Central High School and has maintained lifelong friendships with his fellow classmates. He also graduated from Florence State University in 1968 with a degree in Political Science. Upon graduation, Lonny served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of Pleasant Hill Church his entire life. The church was built by his grandfather, W.D. Brooks. His mother, Kathryn, served as the church’s organist for many years. Pleasant Hill Church holds a special place in all of his family’s hearts.
Lonny loved his family, church, friends, and his YMCA buddies. He especially looked forward to his monthly dinners with his Brooks family cousins. Lonny was passionate about Alabama football and his Saturdays were devoted to watching them play. He would text with his son and grandsons with discussions about how they were playing. He enjoyed watching documentaries and reading books on American and world history.
We would like to thank all of our family, friends, church, and neighbors for the prayers and support throughout Lonny’s illness. We are forever grateful to Dr. Amber Olsen and all of the nurses and staff at Southern Hospice who walked with us through this difficult journey.
Lonny will be honored on December 17, 2024, at Pleasant Hill Church. The funeral service will be at 1:00. Pallbearers include Brent Harbin, Kenny Wagnon, Robert Hunt, Nathan Harbin, Noah Wagnon, Carter Wagnon, Emory Wagnon, and Ben Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dennis Brooks, Gene Fulmer, George Perkins, and Tommy McDonald.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Pleasant Hill Church’s building fund in order to help continue building His kingdom.
