Lonnie Odell Whitman age 78 passed away December 12, 2016 Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
He was born January 16, 1938 in Chester County, the Phillips School Community, the son of the late Roby Odell and Era Alva Brooks Whitman. He attended schools at Phillips School and in 1956 married Peggy Garner. They made their home in the Old Friendship community. Mr. Whitman worked at Brown Shoe Company for twelve years and was in the timber business. He worked for Southwest Electric Corporation for twenty-three years as an equipment operator. He raised and trained horses and helped his grandsons and neighbors learn to rope. He was a member of the Old Friendship Baptist Church.
Mr. Whitman is survived by his wife, Peggy Garner Whitman; a daughter, Lona Whitman Bolton and husband Shawn of Henderson and a son, Craig Whitman and wife Janice of Henderson; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Homer Whitman of Selmer and Frank Whitman of Bethel Springs and a sister, Sandra Bass of Michie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Darrel Whitman in 2000.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Iran Smith and Glen Harris officiating. Burial will be at Old Friendship Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel from 5:00 PM until 9:00 pm Wednesday.
