Lloyd E. Shaffer, most recently of Huntsville, Alabama, died at his home on Monday, May 30, 2022. Born in Brookville, PA, on January 10, 1942, he was the son of the late Clarence C. and Alice L. (Huber) Shaffer. He was married to the former Linda S. Hughey in Brookville on September 21, 1963. She survives.
Lloyd graduated from Brookville High School in 1959 and from Penn State University in 1963, having attended on a Naval ROTC scholarship. He served 23 years as a US Naval Officer, retiring as a Commander in 1986. During his service, he saw action in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as the commander of both posts in Brookville. A man with a variety of talents and interests, Lloyd also spent time as a pig farmer in Tioga County, PA, a defense contractor in Eagan, MN, and a shipbuilding executive in Sturgeon Bay, WI. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, macrame, woodworking, and wood-turning.
Upon retiring from shipbuilding, Lloyd and Linda returned to the Brookville area, where he worked for Shaffer’s Home Improvements. He served on the Brookville Area School Board from 1997 to 2005, serving as president of the board for seven of those years.
In addition to his wife Linda, Lloyd is survived by two children: Ward (Laura) Shaffer of Walton, NY, and Karen (David) Howard of Huntsville, AL; one grandchild: Rachel (Trey) Pearce of Sunflower, MS; one great-grandchild: Liam Pearce of Sunflower, MS; four sisters: Violet (Tom) Greene of Erie, Hazel Reitz of Salem, VA, Janet Park of Brookville, and Twila (Jeff) Bergholtz of Waterford; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Morningside Baptist Church in Huntsville, AL, on Tuesday, June 28, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
