Lionel Douglas (Doug) Isbell – Obituary

Lionel Douglas (Doug) Isbell, age 76, passed away on March 29, 2018 after an extended illness. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. He was a retired Math Teacher from Northwest Shoals Community College and retired from the National Guard after 23 years of service. He served on the Board of Directors for Valley Credit Union for over 38 years.
His visitation will be Monday, April 2, 2018, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Highland Park Baptist Church. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Officiating the service will be Brett Pitman, Mike Pratt and Wes Howard. Burial will follow in Colbert Memorial Gardens. There will be no graveside services.
Doug was the youngest of 9 siblings who called him “Bud” and loved him dearly. He was loved by all who knew him. He was predeceased by his first wife, Martha Duncan Isbell; his parents, Homer and Edna Weems Isbell; brothers, Gunter, Ray, Marsell and Tom Isbell; and sister, Josephine Oliver.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Susan Baites Isbell; son, Jason Lee Isbell (Kaci); stepsons, Matthew Howard and Wes Howard (Amy); grandchildren, Ella and Gunner Isbell and Brigham and Blakely Howard; sisters, Donnie Byrd, Mary Jane Lackey, and Tina Tverberg; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Terry Isbell, Myron Lackey, Danny Lackey, Darryl Tverberg, Sander Tverberg and Sammy Dennis. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Board of Directors of Valley Credit Union and members of Doug and Susan’s Sunday school class.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Randy Pounders, Dr. Michael Quadrini, and the Muscle Shoals DaVita Center. Also, thanks to Kindred Hospice and Home Instead for their excellent care.
A special thanks to Alan and Wendy Willingham for helping our family enjoy the final months of Doug’s life.
