ATHENS-An inmate has been charged with assaulting a Limestone County Sheriff’s Corrections Officer. On Saturday, September 14, 2024, a Corrections Officer was doing a routine check in a cellblock when attacked by Inmate Nathan Harville. Inmate Harville pushed the officer into an open cell and began striking him in the face.
Harville attempted to gain control of the officer’s radio, ultimately taking the mic cord and attempted to choke him. The officer was able to radio for help, and additional officers responded, securing the inmate.
The officer was treated at Athens Limestone Hospital Emergency Room for a facial cut resulting in 10 stitches and other lacerations of the head and arm.
Inmate Harville has been incarcerated in the Limestone County jail for 670 days, awaiting trial on a felony distribution of controlled substance. During his incarceration, he has been charged with nine additional crimes. Seven of these offenses are felony violent crimes, including escape, assaults, and possession of contraband weapons.
Corrections Officers play a vital role in maintaining safety and order within county detention facilities. Their training is extensive and continuous, reflecting the importance and complexity of their duties. Despite this, their contributions are often overlooked or underestimated. Corrections Officers are responsible for managing violent, habitual, mentally ill, and addictive offenders, and their jobs are full of daily challenges and new issues. These men and women are truly the unsung heroes of law enforcement, and their profession deserves recognition for the difficult and demanding work they do in today’s jails.
