Lila was the daughter of Carlos Rushin Cude (1894-1965) and Martha Berthalee Lane Cude (1895-1979) and grew up in Linden and Centerville. She married Paul Duncan after graduation from Hickman County High School in 1940, and they soon moved to Williamsport near Paul’s job with Armour Mining, and later Monsanto Chemical, where he retired in 1968.

In 1944, Lila began work part-time as the Assistant Postmaster at Williamsport under Mildred Stallings. In 1958, she became Postmaster, a post she held until she retired in 1983. In 1962, Lila and Paul opened Duncan’s Grocery in Williamsport. After Paul’s death in 1989, she was a frequent Volunteer at Maury Regional Medical Center for 20 years where she became something of a “fixture.” She not only volunteered at the hospital, but also sewed many of the Christmas stockings that newborns wore home, along with burial gown for precious little stillborn babies.

Survivors include her daughter, Martha Mae Duncan of Columbia; son, Donald Paul (Kathy) Duncan of Linden; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Pardue Duncan; grandsons, Greg Duncan (Lynde James), Sam Duncan, David (Ashlea) Duncan; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Andrew “Bob” Duncan; three sisters; and one brother.

Active pallbearers will be Sam Duncan, Greg Duncan, David Duncan, James Bratton, Wesley Uptain, Jim Moore, and Andy Beyer. Honorary pallbearers include members of Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, and members of Williamsport Methodist Church.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of NHC Columbia.
