Lester Gene “Mitch” Mitchell, 88, of Florence, passed away on June 1, 2023. He was a member of First Christian Church in Valhermoso Springs, Alabama.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday June 6, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. in the First Christian Church Cemetery at Valhermoso Springs, Alabama. Officiating will be Clint Coffey.

Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his father Eugene Mitchell and mother Betha Brown Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandra Alice Jennings Mitchell, daughter Sonya Mitchell Mewbourn and husband Gregory, sister, Betty Jo Crabtree and husband Hugh Crabtree Sr., grandson Gabriel C. Stegmaier, and several nieces and nephews.

Mitch was born in McBurg, Tennessee on April 19, 1935. He was a graduate of Petersburg High School in Petersburg, Tennessee. After graduation, Mitch served in the U.S. army from 1958 to 1960. His service included time in West Germany which he remembered fondly.

After his time in army, Mitch worked on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama for the Department of Defense. As part of his duties he traveled extensively across the country. He retired in 1990 having achieved the rank of GS 14.

Mitch had a long retirement during which he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He passed peacefully followingnumerous health struggles. He is finally at rest and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
