Mrs. Lena Freeman Long, 92, made her transition Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at her residence in Sheffield, Alabama. She was born in Lawrence County, the youngest of four daughters to the late Earl and Juanita Freeman on Nov. 4, 1923.
She confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age. She united with First Missionary Baptist Church, Sheffield, Alabama. She was a faithful member and served as choir member and on the finance committee for many years.
She received her undergraduate degree from Alabama A&M University, Normal, Alabama, and her master’s from Columbia University, New York, New York. She was a retired educator of the Sheffield School system where she received many honors and awards. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. Long Sr.; and her son, Richard “Ricky” R. Long Jr.; and sisters, Edna Earle Johnson and Paralee Armstead.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Carolyn (LeRoy) Long Knox, of High Point, North Carolina; one sister, Myrtle Freeman Simpson, of Sheffield, Alabama; several nieces and nephews, Loretta Goodloe, Zethelyn (Charlie) Johnson, of Florence, Alabama, Nepsie (Ronnie) Arnold, of Cleveland, Tennessee, Robert (Frances) Randle, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Vernon (Estelle), of New Haven, Connecticut, Patricia Simpson, of New Orleans, Louisiana, Yolanda (Bobby) Pruitt, of Sheffield, Alabama, Joseph (Heidi) Long, of Vinnea, Virginia, Sanford (Pamela) Long Jr., of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Jennifer (Ricky) Davidson, of Sommerset, New Jersey, and Jacquelyn Long, of Norfolk, Virginia; and a host of great and great-great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family hour will be today, 6-8 p.m., at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, Alabama. The funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at noon at First Missionary Baptist Church, Sheffield, Alabama. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
