I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 KJV
God in His infinite wisdom and power shares his children with us. He allows them to live among us until he is ready for their return home. Lawanda answered that call on December 14, 2023.
Lawanda Michelle Nance Burruss affectionately known as “Boonkey” or “LA” was born January 12, 1972 the second daughter to Doris James Nance and the Charlie Nance Jr.
Lawanda acquired her education at Huntsville City Schools and graduated from J.O. Johnson. During her early years in school, she met the love of her life Herschel Burruss, who she would later marry and to this union three daughters were born.
Lawanda accepted Jesus as her Personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at Meridianville Bottom P.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. Sammie Sanders Jr. In her later years she joined Peace of Jesus Church under Pastor Trevor Briggs, where she served as the church clerk and helped organize the first can-a-thon, which is now an annual ministry to the community. Lawanda was no stranger to hard work. She loved to talk and meet new people. She was always willing to put her own needs and wants aside to help others. She displayed those actions throughout the motorcycle and social clubs near and far. Lawanda shared a loyal dedication to the motorcycle community like her father once did. She remained encouraging, resilient, and persevered through it all. She was a fighter till the end and her unwavering faith should be an inspiration to us all.
Family members that preceded her in death are her father, Mr. Charlie Nance Jr., sister Pamela James Pope, brother-in-law Perry Toney, and father-in-law O.C. Burruss.
Her memories will forever be cherished by her loving husband: Herschel D. Burruss; her lovely and caring daughters, Calandria D. Nance, Crishona H. Nance and O’Cashia S. Burruss; her devoted and caring mother Doris Nance; her beloved grandson, Zamarian O. Burruss, who was the light of her life; a devoted sister, Charlene Nance Toney; one uncle, William Gregory James; mother-in-law Shirley Burruss Matthews; a devoted nephew and niece Deonte’ Nance and DeAsia Toney; four brothers-in-law Harold Burruss (Lisa), Walter Burruss, Maurice Burruss, Billy Ray Walton (Yuma); two sisters-in-law, Barbara Ragland-Cole and Carol Burruss; three special sons-in-love, Marquez Jones, Darius Litzey and Chaddrick Maclin; two devoted cousins, Phyllis James and Gwen Hurt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
