LaVerne Higgins – Obituary

Laverne-Higgins-1441727097LaVerne Higgins departed this life on Monday, September 7, 2015, at the age of 84 years, 4 months, 8 days. He was born in Waterloo, Alabama on April 30, 1931, the son of the late Henry and Velma Scott Higgins. On November 24, 1955, he was united in marriage to Shelby Jene Caperton, who survives.

LaVerne served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a retired Fireman Lieutenant with the City of Memphis Fire Department. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Savannah Masonic Lodge #102, and the Woodmen of the World. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and loved his family dearly.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Shelby Caperton Higgins of Savannah, Tennessee; son Gregory Todd Higgins and wife, Dana of Savannah, Tennessee; grandson, Zachary Todd Higgins; brother, Merriell Higgins and wife, Darlene of Florence, Alabama.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Lorene Smith and Nell Claunch; brothers, Raymond and Billy Joe Higgins.
