Graveside Services for Larry Duane Smith, age 81 of Ashland, were held on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. at Faith Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Hester and Pastor Steve Robertson officiating.

Mr. Smith passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at his home. Born in Utica, NY, Larry moved to Alabama around the age of ten. He joined the US Army after finishing high school and several years of college and retired after 20 years of service. He had a brilliant mind and the Army gave him an arena to excel. He loved his country and was a true Patriot. Larry enjoyed the years with Mrs. Dee, joining her in her mission work to Israel. He truly cared for others with a Christ like nature.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores “Dee” Smith of Ashland; a daughter, Sonya Parks (Jeff) of Auburn, AL; one son, Michael K. Smith (Cenda) of Albertville, AL; two sisters, Patricia Pellegrino and Jacquelyn Smith both of New York; brother, Laney Smith of New York; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; also his extended family, Allen Anderson of Kentucky, Cheryl Pille (David) of Illinois, Becky Smith (Tommy) of Kentucky, Lori Seymour (Raymond) of Pell City, AL, Robert “Buck” Anderson (Deborah) of Ashland, several additional grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Laney Smith and his mother, Margaret Smith.

Josh Brown, Justin Brown, Jeremy Brown, John Hurst, Chad Jordan and Drake Smith served as pallbearers. Bobby Anderson and Chuck Freas were honorary pallbearers.

Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
