ATHENS-Encourage the children to not be couch potatoes and trade in video game time for a sack and an egg.
Parents can let kids be kids again by bringing them to Kids Day at the Athens Saturday Market on Saturday, Aug. 23, where there will be sack races, a wooden egg race and more. Children can also shake the hand that feeds them by meeting the farmers who grow the produce they eat.
The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon. Children’s activities start at 9 a.m.
There will be face painting and relays like a sack race and wooden egg race. The John Wade Keyes DAR members will offer prizes to children who can say the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. Pam Hartmann, owner of Retrobics, will lead the children in fun dances.
The Athens Saturday Market Committee’s mission is to support local agriculture and increase economic opportunities for farmers, small businesses, and artisans; to educate and provide access to healthy local foods; and to build a vibrant gathering place for Athens residents and visitors. Kids Day is a way to build interest in the market and its vendors among a younger generation.
The Athens Saturday Market is in its second year and was recently named a state certified Farmers Market by the Farmers Market Authority. The certification was determined by the policies and procedures maintained by the Athens Saturday Market.
“Our primary focus is the grower,” said Committee Chairwoman, Laurie Glenn. “When the growers asked that we extend the Market season, we agreed and will be extending the season into September.”
Glenn said vendors have had a good growing season.
“Shoppers will be able to continue purchasing beans, tomatoes, squash, corn and okra,” she said. “Gluten free baked goods, artisan tea, breakfast biscuits and goat cheese are also available at the Market.”
