Joyce T. BuchananIt is with profound sadness–but great gratitude–that the family of Joyce T. Buchanan reflects on the life of our wife, mother, sister and fellow Christian worker.

Joyce was born in Athens, Alabama on September 2, 1949 to Vesta Ella and Samuel Lester Thornton, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by two brothers, Lester Lee Thornton and Phillip Thornton, both of Athens; husband Samuel Cliff Buchanan of Athens; two children, Michael Buchanan (Farmega) of Franklin, Tennessee, and Melanie Letanosky (Jason) of Gardendale, Alabama; and one grandchild, Stella Buchanan.

Joyce was a life-long resident of Athens and graduated from Athens High School in 1967. She married Sam in 1975 and the following decades were filled with homemaking, raising their two children, traveling, and working as an aide at Athens Bible School. She was a faithful Christian servant and was a member at Westview Church of Christ at the time of her passing on February 25, 2021.

Joyce’s friends and loved ones treasure the way she gracefully lived her life and served as an example of quiet determination even when challenged by serious health difficulties. She touched many lives in her roles at Athens Bible School and the Bible classes she taught for young children. Joyce loved children and they were attracted to her because they could feel her love. A very special place in her heart was reserved for her precious granddaughter Stella.

We miss Joyce’s ready smile, her humble and sweet disposition, and the way she faithfully served her family and her Heavenly Father. Her life is an inspiration to those who knew her and her influence will continue to dwell in us as we look forward to the Great Reunion.

A graveside service will be held at Athens Roselawn Cemetery on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at 10:00am with Tim Buchanan (brother-in-law) and Kasey Harbin officiating. Pall bearers will be Michael Buchanan, Wayne Buchanan, Jake Ausley, Tim Thornton, Jason Letanosky, and Jonathan Hudson.
