Josephine “Jo” Dean – Obituary

Josephine “Jo” Dean, 78, of Leonardtown, Maryland, passed away in the early morning hours on Monday, September 3, 2018, after a three-year battle with cancer. She was born on June 24, 1940 to Earl and Ruby McCalman of Vinemont, Alabama. On October 13, 1958, she married Franklin E. Dean. One year later they were blessed with the birth of their only child, a daughter. Her life’s accomplishments included being a loving daughter and sister, a dedicated U.S. Navy wife in various places in the United States, the best Mother ever, and a fantastic seamstress. She turned her ceramics hobby into a business, and later ran Dean’s Cleaning which serviced residents and businesses throughout St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Josephine treasured her time with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Through her battle with cancer, she maintained her sense of humor, demonstrated her will to live, personal strength, and her love for her family and friends. She welcomed everyone into her life with a hug!

She is survived by her daughter, Terry (Bob) Bohannon of Manassas, Virginia; four grandchildren, Bobby Whitehead, Heather (Tom) Lim, Melissa Whitehead and Quin (Jessica) Bohannon; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Felix (Jerri) McCalman, Edna Rutsey, Delores (Doug) Poole and Mike (Carol) McCalman; and many nephews and nieces. Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, her disabled veteran husband, and her brother, John. The endless number of lives she touched with her laughter and love will forever be her legacy.
