The community of Limestone County lost one of its pillars and friends as Joseph “Joey” Glenn Hicks Jr, 59 of Athens, AL, released his final breath at 5:15pm on Sunday November 17th, 2019.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio to Joseph and Frances Hicks but growing up in the Athens and Piney Chapel area, He reminisced fondly of a simpler time during 1960’s and 70’s about life as a typical rural North Alabamian youth, where he was known for his quiet yet loving demeanor, spending his time fishing, caring for animals, riding motorcycles, playing football and guitar all while learning the family business of Petroleum Distribution, Cattle Farming and commodity futures. He delightfully told stories of how his first band called, The Seventh Grade Special, won the talent show by showcasing their rendition of Chuck Berry’s, “Johnny B Goode.”

He met, wed and stayed happily married his entire life to his high school sweetheart and great love of his life Donna D. Hicks, who he is survived by and who diligently cared for him until his last breath.

He was recognized primarily as being the president of Hicks Oil Company, that served the greater limestone county area from 1965 until 2015 but was an incredibly talented guitarist and was highly celebrated and cherished by the community for his involvement with coaching, fundraising, organizing and supporting local sports teams while positively shaping young athletes lives. His colorful colloquialisms and uncanny gift to turn a the most tearful of situations into a belly laughing session will be missed most by those who knew him.
He is survived by his mother and father, Joseph G. Hicks Sr. and Frances A. Hicks, wife Donna D.Hicks, his son Joseph “Jody” Glenn Hicks III, daughter in law Jessica R. Hicks, grandson Joseph “Jax” Glenn Hicks IV, his sister and brother in law Brent and Kathy Jarrett
and a plethora of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and family. The service will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, November 22, 2019 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 12:00-1:45PM. All are encouraged to attend.
