Joseph “Joe” Scalf, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud American, passed away on March 27, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on June 9, 1933 in Corbin, Kentucky, Joe lived a life defined by perseverance, leadership, and deep devotion to his family.
From an early age, Joe demonstrated resilience and determination, overcoming a serious childhood injury that would have slowed many, but never stood in his way. As a young man, he distinguished himself as a natural leader—earning his Eagle Scout rank, serving as President of the Key Club and class president, and being voted Best Dressed during his senior year at Corbin High School.
Joe proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where his passion for engineering began. On July 31, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Scalf, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in love and commitment. Together, they raised four sons—Doug, David, Greg, and Phil—and built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work.
He attended the University of Kentucky, earning his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1958, and later earned his master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Joe dedicated his entire professional career to safeguarding the nation through his extraordinary work on critical U.S. missile systems. He served with the U.S. Space and Missile Command and contributed significantly to Huntsville’s growing defense industry through both government and private sector roles.
Known for being hardworking, intelligent, and humble, Joe led by example in all aspects of his life. His family was his greatest pride and motivation. Through his actions and character, he paved the way for his sons, teaching them how to provide for their families and carry forward the values of integrity, dedication, and perseverance.
He is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Shirley.
Joe is survived by his four sons, Doug Scalf (Walena), David Scalf, Greg Scalf (Tracy), and Phil Scalf; and nine cherished grandchildren, James, Peyton, Alex, Cole, Parker, Wyatt, Shelley, Aaron, and Ryan.
A private service for close family will be held at 11:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Spry Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Village of Promise.
