He is survived by his loving wife, Nenita (nee Ubas); stepdaughters, Sheryl Bernal (Michele), Katherine Gatchalian (Neil), Vanessa Bernal (Arvin) and Kristine Baello (Jefferson); “Uncle Joe’s” favorite little rascals, Neil, Jody, Zeke, Rafaelle, Neilson, Daniel and Gabrielle; siblings, Patricia Paradise (Robert), Gerard Heinz (Linda), Michael Heinz (Diane), Timothy Heinz, Geraldine Frattalone, Kathryn Stelnick (Greg), James Heinz, Nancy Heinz, Daniel Heinz (Linda), and Marian Austin (Steve); sisters-in-law, Jayne Heinz and Regina Heinz; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Growing up in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, NY, Joe played his favorite sport Roller Hockey and was an Altar Boy at Resurrection R.C. Church. He moved around a bit, spending time in Los Angeles, CA before retiring to Huntsville, AL. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973. While serving in Japan, he was commended for intercepting and identifying Russian naval maneuvers.
Joe graduated from Long Beach College and became a Registered Nurse. He worked for the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department until he retired in 2020. He was a gourmet chef, specializing in brisket and cheesecake as all his family and friends will attest. In 2010, Joe met the love of his life, Nenita, and married her soon after. For 15 years, they cherished every moment together with their children and grandchildren. “Occasionally” Joe would enjoy a trip to the racetrack or a cigar with his friend of 45 years, Pastor Vincent Barringer.
Joe’s love, kindness, compassion and sassy sense of humor will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched.
Special thanks to Kristine for the devotion and compassionate care she gave Joe in his final days.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 12th, at 11:00 a.m. at Farley Community Church, 12302 Bell Road, Huntsville AL 35803.
