Obituary of Joseph Bancroft Hill III Joseph B. Hill III, affectionately known as “Butch,” passed away on August 1, 2026. Born on June 30, 1951, in Huntsville, Alabama, Butch grew up in Decatur, where his family owned and operated All-Wright’s Pastry Shop for more than 40 years.

Butch graduated from Decatur High School in 1969 and later attended Samford University. He built a successful career in insurance sales, but those who knew him best will remember him for much more than his work. Butch loved refereeing football, playing golf, and spending time with the people he cared about. He had a friendly spirit, a warm personality, and a way of making others feel welcome.

A lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church, Butch’s faith was an important part of his life. It was there that he and his wife raised their family and formed many treasured friendships. His life was grounded in faith, family, laughter, and the simple joy of being together.

Butch is survived by his wife, Helen Owens Hill; his daughter, Carrie Hill Dobson (Marc); his son, Joseph Bancroft Hill IV (Gabrielle) and his 4 beloved grandchildren, Banks Hill, Helen Claire Dobson, Laney Dobson, and Jude Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bettye Hornbuckle Hill and Joseph B. Hill Jr.

Butch leaves behind a lifetime of wonderful memories and a legacy of love that will continue through his family and friends. Though he will be deeply missed, those who loved him can celebrate a life well lived and take comfort in knowing that his joyful spirit, kindness, and faith will remain with them always.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church in Decatur, Alabama. A celebration of Butch’s life will begin at 2:00 p.m., with a graveside service to follow.
